Bishop thanks climate strikers for their care

Our Bishop of Salisbury, who is also the Church of England’s lead Bishop for the Environment said:

“As Christians, we must commit to being good stewards of God’s creation, to care for the environment and to respond to the serious circumstances we face.

“The intent of so many Councils and Parliament declaring a climate emergency now needs following up with action.

“I am grateful for the care with which many students are preparing their action.

“In Church of England Schools, the inspection framework (SIAMS) about environmental responsibility calls for courageous advocacy, and there is an of opportunity for schools to organise involvement so that children can participate in the event safely.

“Churches might invite schools to come and pray about the care of God’s creation; a good way of making use of the educational opportunities, keeping children safe and honouring the spirit of the protest.”

Students and pupils from accross Wiltshire and Dorset took part in the Global strike which saw millions across the world take to the streets to demand urgent action to save the planet, in the largest environmental protest in history.

The Archbishop of Canterbury also tweeted how inspired he was by the passion of those who took part:

"It’s inspiring to see young people so passionate about protecting God’s creation and calling our attention to the Climate Emergency. Thank you for showing us where our priorities should be.
Praying for your voices to be heard here and around the world.

"Please be safe in all you do - and encourage your school to organise participation activities, as many schools, churches and cathedrals are already doing.

"I received these cards [pictured above] from children recently, asking for adults like me to speak up & support them. As a Christian, responding to the Climate Emergency is not optional – it’s essential. We're called to protect God’s creation and love our neighbour. Thank you for your leadership."
