Award-winning glass, organ, toilets and lighting
The latest DAC Awards for church projects have been presented to the winners at Diocesan Synod.
2019 DAC Award-winners from St Michael and All Angels, Combe Bissett
The DAC* Awards are presented to churches that members think have shown particular excellence in their application process.
The 2019 awards all went to Wiltshire churches and covered a new stained glass window to mark the 100th anniversary of the First World War, the restoration and cleaning of an ancient organ, a lighting system and two new church toilets.
St Michael and All Angels Church at Combe Bissett was given an award for the work that went into the application for a new stained-glass window in the church.
The DAC members were very impressed with the detailed application and beautiful design for the Remembrance East Window.
Entitled 'Lest We Forget', the design incorporates poppies and a cross and is placed so that the war memorial outside provides a backdrop to the new stained glass.
St Peter's Church at Great Cheverell near Devizes was given an award for a successful application to the DAC for a toilet.
The DAC members were particularly impressed with the local consultations on the project, which saw the church face the issues of no mains water or drainage and no easily accessible place for a toilet to go.
Members were also impressed with the excellent process throughout the scheme, and the fact that they had sought and taken on board early informal advice from the DAC before submitting any proposals.
The ancient Holy Cross Church at Seend near Melksham was also given an award for their new toilet, which is located outside the main historic church building.
The DAC members said this had been a very complicated scheme and along the way various ideas had been explored. They were particularly impressed with the clever solution, that used what was once a bier store to house the new facilities.
St Mary's Church at Great Bedwyn at the very top of our Diocese received their award for their cleaning of a Grade 2* Walker Organ with 610 pipes, acquired from Romsey Abbey. They were commended for a very good application that had followed DAC advice.
Heytesbury St Peter and St Paul near Warminster was given an award for a replacement chancel lighting scheme.
The new scheme featured LED fittings with the ability to programme high and low level lighting, replacing three candelabras that had come at some point in their history from Salisbury Cathedral.
