Archbishop Desmond Tutu dies aged 90

by Michael Ford last modified 26 Dec, 2021 02:02 PM

Bishop Karen and Dean Nick release statements following the passing of The Most Revd Desmond Tutu

We were sad to hear in the diocese this morning of the death of Archbishop Desmond Tutu, who was made a Sarum Canon in 2008.

Bishop Karen writes "I first met Desmond Tutu in Cape Town at the inauguration of the new Archbishop.  His joy was infectious.  His Christian witness was remarkable.  We give thanks for a most courageous, inspiring and prophetic Christian leader, whose faith was contagious; whose commitment to inclusivity was genuine and whose actions brought freedom to so many. An example to us all.  We pray also at this time for his family.  May he rest in peace and rise in glory"

Dean Nick says, "The whole community ⁦at Salisbury Cathedral mourns our distinguished Sarum Canon Desmond Tutu, giving thanks for his long life, and his exceptional and prophetic service of God. May he rest in peace and rise in glory."
