All Aboard the Fundraiser!

It's hoped recalling memories of the old Abbotsbury Branch Railway will help to raise much needed funds for a local church.

Local historian Brian Jackson will be speaking on the railway, at St Nicholas' Church Broadwey this Friday.

The Broadwey Station on the Abbotsbury Branch line was situated right next to the church, where a builder’s yard is now.

It is hoped that featuring the history of this line, which opened in 1885, branching off the Dorchester-Weymouth line at Upwey Junction with stations at Broadwey (Upwey after 1913) and Portesham, with a halt at Coryates being added in 1906, will attract a good audience.

A spokesman for St Nicholas' Church said:

“We are hoping to welcome as many people as possible and the money raised will help towards our church’s upkeep. As it is a very old building, several repairs are needed, the most important one being to the roof.

“We hold our events in the nave of the church, as we have no hall.

“We have a screen from which we sing our hymns and say our prayers, and this will be in use when Brian informs us of, I’m sure, everything there is to know about the Abbotsbury branch."
