Abbey's heating to be restored

The Abbey is one of nearly 100 churches and cathedrals that will gain a share of £13 million in government heritage stimulus grants.

Speaking on behalf of the Diocese and Milton Abbey Heritage Trust, our Archdeacon of Dorset Antony MacRow-Wood said:

“We are delighted we were successful in an application to the fund for £10k for Milton Abbey to restore reliable heating to the Abbey.”

The 14th century former Benedictine Abbey sits in the grounds of Milton Abbey School, near Blandford Forum. It is part of the Diocese of Salisbury and the spiritual home to the Benedictine Companions of the Abbey at Milton, whilst being used as a school chapel in term time.

The Companions are a dispersed community of men and women, lay and ordained, who live out Benedictine life in families, communities and work places across Dorset and further afield.

Before the pandemic and subsequent restrictions, the Abbey had planned a series of musical events and has also hosted a number of weddings.

Archdeacon Antony added:

“A working heating system will preserve the fabric of the building can only enhance the Abbey as a venue and visitor attraction once the present restrictions are lifted.”
