A taste of pioneer ministry

by Michael Ford last modified 15 Oct, 2021 10:02 PM

The Diocese is partnering with the Diocese of Bath & Wells and Church Mission Society to run the CMS certificate - a new course for the formation and training of lay pioneers. Two taster events are taking place in November.

The taster events are for anyone who might be interested or wanting to find out more about the course.

The first taster event will take place online on Tuesday 2nd November at 7.30pm and the second will be in person on Sunday 7th November at 2.00pm.

Details and booking information:

Online taster evening tickets, Tue 2 Nov 2021 at 19:30 | Eventbrite

In-person taster day tickets, Sun 7 Nov 2021 at 14:00 | Eventbrite

The CMS certificate is a course in pioneer ministry involving 6 modules over 6 weekends and will run from February - November 2022. It will also form the pathway to being recognised as a Commissioned Lay Pioneer in the Diocese. The modules are:

  • What is pioneer mission?
  • The Bible in context
  • Doing theology
  • Mission spirituality
  • Mission ecclesiology
  • Pioneering in the rural church

Pioneer Minister Paul Bradbury is one of the course leaders. He says:

“It is more than a course – it’s really a supportive learning community for lay pioneers, from those already pioneering to others who are wanting to develop their call to this ministry.”

Bath & Wells Diocese has run two cohorts on this course already. Lindsay, who has completed the course, said:

“It’s been such a valuable experience to look at mission in the local context. To take the written words out of the textbooks and apply that learning to the place that I live.

“It’s opened my eyes to what’s unseen in my community, challenging my understanding of what it means to live on the margins of society.  Learning about mission in a creative and inclusive way supported by like-minded people has been an amazing experience.”

The Salisbury cohort of the course will be led by Pioneer Minister Paul Bradbury, supported by Mission Co-ordinator Steve Inglis and Hamworthy Pioneer Curate Sally Taylor.

Paul Bradbury adds:

“It’s a great opportunity for anyone who wants to deepen their understanding of the theology and practice of pioneering and for anyone expressing a call to pioneer ministry. For further details on the course, you can download the course brochure here or contact Sally Taylor [sally.taylor@poolemc.org.uk].”
