A cut above

by Michael Ford last modified 05 Jun, 2020 04:09 PM

During lockdown, our rural ministry teams have been streaming a variety of services and events from their homes but, in a first, one of our Rural Field Officers (RFOs) streamed his hair being cut.

But it was all done to raise much needed funds for the church.

The Revd Canon Richard Hancock, who looks after the villages of Sixpenny Handley and Pentridge, decided that people might give to watch his wife Kate cut his hair online - and they did.

Richard says:

"This has now raised just under £1700 for St Mary’s and St Andrew’s.

"This has helped hugely with the short fall we have been facing from Sunday giving."

Fellow RFO Rhona Floate posted:

"Well done Kate and Richard, much more fun than watching paint dry!"

Showing off his new 'buzz cut' after Kate had finished, Richard joked:

"I’m now trying to think what I did to upset her!"

Richard says key to the success of this as an online fundrasier was a site called Golden Giving:

"They are similar to Just Giving but much better as their fees are far less and they offer lots more options to charities."

You can watch Richard's hair cut here.

Richard says that, while no one else has volunteered for the chop, the churches are now planning some online quiz nights and a karaoke night to help raise funds in this difficult times:

"Golden Giving will help us to do this as we can sell tickets for such events."
