A Christian Aid Week like no other

With physical distancing in operation, and events having to be cancelled, resourceful supporters stepped up for the largest charity collection week in the UK.

Initiatives included daily prayers, services and quizzes; 'e-Envelopes'; hymnathons and bibliothons; 'Little Brekkies'; envelope artwork in windows; and a petition to cancel debt payments of poor countries during the global pandemic.

Nearly 5,000 e-Envelopes were sent to share the joy of the week with friends and family, and to ask for donations in aid of vulnerable and needy people, including children, families and refugees. Last year, 1.7m people were helped by Christian Aid alone.

The One World group in Ashbourne, Derbyshire, raised nearly £6,000 online – more than they were hoping to raise from their usual house-to-house collection and coffee morning.

In Nottinghamshire, Great-grandfather John Hindson walked one million steps in his garden and raised £2000 for Christian Aid Week.

In the Salisbury area and Wyke Regis, local Christian Aid groups held virtual 'Lockdown Quizzes’. Salisbury Cathedral School set a daily challenge, running up and down stairs 100s of times in total, and also raised around £2000.

Atworth with Shaw and Whitley set up a JustGiving page, and the likes of St Katharine's Holt and the Beaminster Team posted updates and prayers, encouraging more donations.
