23 New Revs for the Diocese *Updated
New priests and deacons to serve across Dorset and Wiltshire
Nine new deacons were made on Sunday 28 June
Fourteen new priests and nine new deacons, serving in parishes across Wiltshire and Dorset, were ordained at Salisbury Cathedral over the weekend of Saturday 27 and Sunday 28 June. They are part of a huge contingent of around 1,000 new clergy being ordained across the Church of England this summer.
The Bishop of Salisbury, the Rt Revd Nicholas Holtam, the Bishop of Ramsbury, the Rt Revd Dr Ed Condry, and the Dean of Salisbury, the Very Revd June Osborne, were all present at both services.
One new priest who made a radical change in career direction is Dr Janneke Blokland, the Curate of Marlborough. Janneke, born and bred in the Netherlands, holds a PhD in semiconductor nanostructures and was working as a researcher in the prestigious Fritz Haber Institute in Berlin when she felt a call to the priesthood.
Janneke said, “I am really interested in people, and enjoy helping people understand their own experiences better and put them into words. In a small town like Marlborough, I’m recognised and often the person who has time to chat when others are busy. I can have a coffee with someone and quietly reflect on the questions they have – that can be the most valuable thing you can give.”
One of the new deacons is Kevin Rogers, a former social worker who worked in family support and child protection. Married with three children, one still in education, he will serve at St Luke’s in Poole’s Parkstone district.
Kevin said, “I think I had a call to ministry for ages, but it took me a long time to accept it!
“I’m really looking forward to being in a role where people expect me to talk about Christianity, and the opportunities for conversation and prayer that come with that. I also want to help people in the Church to live as followers of Jesus Christ in their daily lives, especially at work.
“I know there will be challenges as well as opportunities in being such a public Christian – sometimes speaking up for the right thing isn’t popular with everyone!”
