Choir Visits Durham
Singing in Durham Sixth Form Centre
It was still dark when the choir set off from King's Cross on Friday morning for their pilgrimage to the city of Durham. Northern towns in dark outline flew by and the splendour of the cathedral and castle, as our train pulled in to our final destination, shone invitingly. The rain and wind were no match for the warmth of our reception at Durham Sixth Form Centre where we were greeted by Ellen Beveridge and her team and provided with their wonderful theatre in which space to rehearse (in addition to very many delights to eat). We devoted some useful hours to preparing for our performance in front of a joyful crowd of students, generously compared by Ellen herself. Shortly afterwards we were off to St Nicholas' church for our next performance and, joined by Yola Khodja (our talented choral alumna, who has just matriculated at the University of Durham) we sang to an intimate audience of collected friends. It was, however, singing Orlando Gibbons in Pizza Express that caused most unexpected enjoyment - the resonant acoustic of the beautiful building a fitting close to a joyful day.
