Physical Education
Sport runs from the early morning until 5pm each evening and every Saturday a member of the school's PE team runs Saturday morning sport. Teachers across school contribute to physical exercise, with history teachers taking part in netball, linguists in hockey, English teachers in tennis and economists in football. It is a wide and varied diet of competitive sport. We take part in the Royal Borough's competitive fixtures and even host some of the competitions on our very own multi-games surfaces and G4 astro pitches. All teachers are expected to contribute to extra curricular activity and sport is one of the most popular ways of extending students' learning activities outside the classroom
The promotion of an active lifestyle is one of the central aims of physical education (PE). The role of schools and PE in promoting health, producing a ‘healthy nation’ and in tackling obesity has been increasingly recognised in recent years. Lack of physical activity and increasingly sedentary lifestyles in school-age children is a global health problem, but physical activity during childhood and adolescence has multiple health benefits. Opportunities to engage students in physical activity are critical in encouraging healthy lifestyles in our students. With the pressures resulting from a newly reformed curriculum, there is a greater need to promote extra-curricular opportunities for students to assist them in the diversity of their experience. Our PE team has annually drawn impressive numbers of students to participate in the ‘Beyond 3PM’ activities which they provide and under the leadership of Rhian Davies and Mark Matthews, they have led substantial parts of the Duke of Edinburgh Award which is now hugely popular with our students. Encompassing a broad range of sports, students are exposed to individual and team activities that see them refining physical skill and ability. There are weekly opportunities to participate in competitive sport in team games, such as rugby hockey and cricket, and the school often travels to other schools to compete. Competitive sport is complemented by the opportunity for students to attend individual and ‘open’ activities where they develop a sense of physical literacy. With many of our students competing at a national level, competitive sport is an exciting part of school life. In the forthcoming year the PE team will be seeking to support students with achieving nationally recognised coaching qualifications.
The rebuild of our school incorporated the inclusion of exceptional PE facilities. These include, a sports hall, fitness suite, dance studios, a competition swimming pool, and extensive floodlit outdoor areas including an astro-turf games area.
Our staff are passionate about their subject and deliver high quality learning for all students. They also offer an extensive range of extra-curricular activity; our Beyond 3PM offering. All students are encouraged to participate.
