How are residents engaged in a Springdene home?

At the Springdene Group we make every one of our care homes feel like home to every resident - we are committed to making life interesting and fulfilling, to make the most of every day.

Our dedicated team offers a diverse range of activities for residents to choose from. Gentle exercise is encouraged as part of our philosophy and sessions are held every day, while our landscaped gardens offer the perfect places for a leisurely stroll or relaxation in the open air.

Activities are organised on a daily, weekly or monthly basis and typically include crossword and quiz sessions, card and board games and themed reminiscence meetings, craft and cookery workshops, poetry readings and shows presented by visiting entertainers. Among the favourite activities are current affairs discussions. As one of our managers says: "There's nothing our residents like better then putting the world to rights."

There is a host of visits from people with a story to tell - museum curators and arts organisations such as London Children's Ballet who perform for the residents.

Special events

In addition the homes put on summer fetes, Christmas bazaars and arts and crafts fairs, with residents and their families staffing the stalls and the proceeds going to charity. Relatives and friends are encouraged to get involved through our Relatives and Friends Support Group (see video on the right).

One of the most original activities is is The Big Draw, where everyone - from the oldest residents to the youngest members of the family - contributes a small section of a classic painting. When the resulting patchwork is put together, it creates the whole picture in all its glory.

Another popular event is the music festival that takes place every year at our Spring Grove home, which invites pupils in to bring along their instruments and to perform for residents. Now in its 14th highly successful year, the festival has gained a reputation throughout north London schools and developed into a keenly contested event with recognised professional musicians judging musical quality and awarding prizes for the best performances.

Our care extends beyond the residents to their family and friends. We offer a unique Support Group service to help those directly affected by their loved one’s condition who otherwise would be left to struggle alone with the psychological turmoil following their decision. This video explains how, why and when the Group is run...
